The area is part of the traditional region of Lower Carniola and is now included in the Southeast Slovenia Statistical Region.〔(Kočevje municipal site )〕

The name ''Suhi Potok'' literally means 'dry creek'. Toponyms containing the element ''potok'' 'creek' are common in Slovenia and usually correspond to German names ending in ''-bach'' 'creek'.〔Snoj, Marko. 2009. ''Etimološki slovar slovenskih zemljepisnih imen''. Ljubljana: Modrijan and Založba ZRC, p. 325.〕 The obsolete Slovene name ''Suha vas'' means 'dry village'. The German name ''Dürnbach'' also literally means 'dry creek' and may be compared to similar names in Carinthia, such as the hamlet of ''Dürnfeld'' in the Municipality of Magdalensberg.〔
